Getting an MBA should never be an end in itself. Many people just pursue an MBA program because they think that every other person is pursuing one. Therefore, unless you would simply want to be like everyone else, you should only have an MBA if you know that it will add value to your work. In fact, the reason why an organization may promote you or increase your salary is because it believes that once you had an MBA you gained new skills.

There are five skills that every MBA program should offer you; whether it is a one year program or a two year program, whether it is a part time program or a full time program.

Analytical Skills

An MBA program should not just be one where you go and get information from notes and text books which you go and regurgitate in your exam and term papers. Instead, it should be one which allows you to use the knowledge that you already have, to help you analyze information in order to make the right decisions.

Social Awareness

Managing business and organizations is not all about cost minimization vs. output maximization. An MBA program should be able to develop socials skills that should help you in networking while at the same time understating the socio-political environment that you are working under.

Leadership Skills

One of the reasons why some organizations will promote you once you acquire an MBA is because it is expected that after going through the MBA program, you a far better leader than what you were before. Therefore, it is important that when you are pursuing the MBA, you take seriously the aspects of leadership that you may learn in the process.

Improved Character

Apart from leadership skills, you must also train yourself to be more focused and hardworking. Truth be said, a lot of success does not comes through higher intelligence, but mainly due to a better character and a much better ability to focus. Therefore, for the time that you will be pursuing your MBA, it is important that you also shape your character so as to become a better leader in any organization that you might be working in.

Group Skills

A good manager must be both a good team player and a good team leader. An MBA program should help you build this because it is preparing you to work through and with people. You must know how to interact with other members of a group and accommodate other people’s views while at the same time being able to make firm decisions.

The moment you start realizing that an MBA is not an end to itself, you will then be keener on what you are going to come out with from the program. You will even be in a much better situation to determine whether or not you really need to pursue an MBA program.

When someone talks of the types of MBA programs, many people are left to wonder what really the true meaning of the same is.  Some people would argue that when discussing the types of MBA programs, one should focus on the different branches, other say that the length of time should be critical, and so on.

In this article, I would like to go through each of this caliber so that it should be more of the classifications of the MBA programs.

Academic vs. Executive

Academic MBAs are traditional. Normally, they are meant to take at least two years of studying. They require that someone has a university degree in the first place. Apart from that, they also handle other specialties in the second year which helps to divide into other areas of business studies. They are also good for those intending to pursue business education further.

Executive MBAs on the other hand are meant to provide a deeper understanding of business ideas to long serving executives who may not have had the chance to study business before. The Executive MBA normally does not go deep into other branches.

One Year vs. Two-Year

MBA programs can also be divided into one year and two year programs. One year programs are mainly for those students who have had a significant experience in the business world already. On the other hand, two year programs are mainly designed for those who would like to change their careers or recent college graduates who do not have a lot of experience in the business world.

Part Time vs. Full Time

One thing about many of the people who attend MBA lessons is that a good number of them are not recent college graduates. This means that they are working and that they probably just want to increase their skills in business. For this reason, they are designed to offer flexibility and convenience. Here, the students will go to school during the night and during the weekend. Full time MBA programs on the other hand are the more traditional forms of MBA programs. The learner goes to school like a full time student.

These classifications of MBA programs form the basis of most of how MBA programs one will take. For you to take one or the other, you need to consider the cost, the level of experience, the time availability among others.
